The Academy Awards are going back to their roots. After three years without a master of ceremonies, the 94th Academy Awards on March 27 will have one. An ABC executive said Tuesday that there will be one this year.

During the winter Television Critics Association virtual press tour, Hulu’s president of original content and ABC Entertainment, Brandon Monk, confirmed it.

“I’m not sure who will be chosen,” said Erwich. “It might be me,” he quipped, without specifying who would get the position. He believes that Packer, the producer heading up this year’s telecast, will make the correct decision.

“Will has a good grasp on current affairs and entertainment,” Erwich added. “I’m sure he’s got a lot planned, and we’ll have more information soon.”

The Academy Awards were last hosted by ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in 2018.

Following Kevin Hart’s withdrawal from the position of host in 2019, citing old homophobic postings, the Academy continued without a star.

In 2020 and 2021, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did the same thing, recognizing Bong-Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” respectively, both of which won the best picture award.

The organization confirmed this week that veteran director Glenn Weiss will be directing the telecast for a third time.

According to the academy, Wiesend has “extensive experience directing live televised events,” having directed six previous Oscars shows.

“To create an Oscars show that truly celebrates a worldwide love of film, you need someone with the deep technical knowledge and creative insights of Glenn to execute it,” Packer added.

This year’s telecast, according to the institute, should exceed expectations and attract a decent-sized audience.

The Academy Awards’ ratings have been steadily declining over the last decade as cord-cutting and streaming video have surpassed linear television viewership.

The ratings for last year’s Oscars plummeted to an all-time low, attracting only 9.85 million total viewers.
