Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival, which has more than 5000 years of history. It is celebrated on January 14 or 15 of every year in Chennai and all over South India. For the Tamilians, it is a thanksgiving day to Mother Nature for fulfilling all their needs. Wheat, maize, sugarcane, rice, turmeric, milk, sugar, jaggery are offered to the almighty.
The Tamilians worship Lord Indra on the last day of Chithirai month. This is known as ThaiPusam. They offer prayers for a good new year during this time of the year. A number of people visit temples located in Kanyakumari to offer prayers.
The harvest festival is a four-day celebration that falls in the month of Margazhi. The first day of this festival is called ‘Pongal’. It is also known as Makara Sankranthi. This day marks the beginning of festivities when all family members get together and offer prayers. The second day is called Mattu Pongal. On this day, the cattle are bathed with water mixed with turmeric powder and decorated with garlands. They are also fed with special food.
On the third morning, people buy new clothes for their family members. The fourth day of this festival is known as ‘Kanum Pongal’. This is the day for giving thanks to the almighty. People take ‘poojas’ and visit their relatives’ houses.
The first three days are called as the new year, while the fourth day is marked as Tamil New Year. They welcome the new year by wearing new clothes and by distributing sweets to everyone they know.

According to Hindu mythology, there was a demon who would not allow Indra the god of rain, growth and fertility to rule over the kingdom. The demon had earned great powers by doing penance for Lord Brahma. To teach him a lesson, Indra invited the demon to heaven. During his stay in heaven, the demon started to eat food from ghee. He made a demand for food from Indra, which he provided. The demon ate too much and got bloated. In order to release gas, he came out of Indra’s palace through his mouth.
