Robert Irwin Pays TRUBUTE To Betty White On Her 100th Birthday

One of the singular pleasures in life is to be reminded that once again, time has favored us with another stunningly talented performer who continues to surprise and delight by not following the usual script. Today, on what would have been her one hundredth birthday, I find myself amazed by how insanely creative this woman was. It wasn’t enough to merely endure her lengthy career. She had to make it new every time out.

I’ve been watching one of my favorite TV series, The Golden Girls . It originally aired on NBC from 1985-1992 and it hilariously showcased the life, love and challenges that befall four senior citizens who live together in a house in Miami. The show had an extremely talented ensemble cast that included two actresses (Bea Arthur (Dorothy) and Rue McClanahan (Blanche)) who were Broadway musical theater veterans, Estelle Getty (Sophia), whose career spanned more than half a century of work on the big screen, and Betty White (Rose), who was and remains a national treasure.

Since hearing of White’s passing earlier today, I have felt like it’s the passing of an era. But, upon realizing that she would have been celebrating her 100th birthday today–Oh my God! She made it this far? How is that even possible?!

I will never forget the day that betty died. I couldn’t believe she was gone either. But, after witnessing the joy and energy of Golden Girls online clips over the past year–I began to think about how lucky we are to have some record of this magic on film before it has slipped completely into the ethers of time.

One of the things that’s so amazing about this show is how it became a hit on its own terms. But oddly, while some of it took place in Miami, none of the four actresses playing the lead roles were actually from Florida. While three of them (Bea Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan) hailed from California–Estelle Getty was from Pittsburgh. But, even with this geographical incongruity–it didn’t stop the series from being a runaway hit.

Subsequently, for many of us that grew up watching The Golden Girls , it became a fondly remembered TV series that we enjoyed while growing up. And sometimes fond memories are enough to keep a show alive in our hearts and minds.

But, sometimes we can say that–it’s more than just fond memories. Sometimes we can say that–it’s an important part of TV history.
