Netflix’s NEWEST Game Is A Card Battle Game Similar To Hearthstone.

Netflix has announced a new game called The Lord of the Rings: Living Card Game, which is out today on Steam. As its name suggests, it’s based on card-battling games like Hearthstone and Gwent, which are both Blizzard properties.

The Lord of the Rings LCG is unique in that there’s no player vs. player mode at all, just cooperative battles with AI opponents modeled on the movies’ iconic villains. This is because it’s built using a new game engine designed by n-Space exclusively for the game, not adapted from another title—something that comes to show in its graphics and audio design, which are stunning for this kind of game.

You can buy packs of cards that contain units, attacks, and spells to build your decks. There are also original storylines to play through with Sauron’s forces, featuring iconic characters like Gimli, Gandalf, and Frodo (who you control).

It has all the hallmarks of the excellent single-player/co-op experiences we’ve come to expect from the developer, and with a deep synergy system and loads of cards, it’s great fun building your decks and taking on new challenges. But with no online mode and only one or two players at a time supported by each story mission, you’re always going to be battling the AI rather than people.

For those familiar with the genre, this is a superb card battler that might just be even better than Blizzard’s games. But with no online modes, it’ll never have the longevity of those titles, and I can’t help but think a multiplayer mode was an obvious inclusion given the strength of Hearthstone and its imitators.

Still, if you’re a fan of Tolkien’s world and the intricacies of card-battling games, you’ll love this.
