On Long Island, sets have been constructed on soundstages for the Russell Mansion’s numerous rooms, which are dressed in period textiles and designs produced by some of the same European manufacturers that produced the originals in the 1800s.

The enormous structures and opulent interiors were constructed together on the Museum of American Armor’s backlot to re-create part of Manhattan’s East Side in the 19th century. (The show also utilizes locations in Troy, NY, and Newport, RI)

“It’s the biggest build I’ve ever had,” said production designer Robert Shaw. “Compared to previous HBO series I’ve worked on, such as The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, it’s the most colossal construction I’ve ever done. ”

“We kept on drawing and illustrating, and they kept answering yes. ‘How many times will the characters ascend the steps?’ They never did that.”

The cast members read favorite works by Edith Wharton and Henry James in preparation for production, and they studied middle-aged history, etiquette, pronunciation, and social mores. ‘gold
