Crunchyroll ends ad-supported viewing of new series and sequels

Crunchyroll, the streaming platform owned by Sony, has announced that coinciding with the start of the Spring 2022 season, it will no longer support the ad-supported viewing option for simulcast premieres (simultaneous broadcast) and new episodes of the series in course. Previously released chapters will continue to be available for free and with ads for all users.

Before this change, Crunchyroll users did not need a subscription to stream content, they just had to have a little patience, as episodes were available for free with advertising a week after their premiere. This option is now removed and Crunchyroll will only open some of its content on a limited basis. For their part, subscribers will continue to watch all the anime in the same way as before, without ads and with new episodes an hour after Japan.

“With the Spring 2022 season and future seasonal releases, Crunchyroll will update our offer of titles in simulcasts by subscription levels,” says Crunchyroll on its support website. “You will need to have a monthly or annual premium subscription to be able to watch the new and continuing simulcasts.” […] As for ongoing series, the ad-supported viewing option will no longer be available for new episodes, such as the spring season […]”.

Spy x Family, one of the anime of the Spring 2022 season whose first three episodes can be seen with advertising.
To promote its new seasonal simulcasts, Crunchyroll will offer free ad-supported viewing of the first few episodes of a selection of titles for a limited time. In the Spring 2022 season, the chosen animes are: Spy x Family, A Couple of Cuckoos, Dawn of the Witch, Tomodachi Game, Skeleton Knight in Another World, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody and Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs.

The first three episodes of these titles will be available for free and ad-supported one week after their premiere and until May 31. After this date, all episodes of the season sampler will require a subscription. Free content will continue to be offered in this way in the future.

Crunchyroll offers two subscription options: Fan and Mega Fan. Fan includes unlimited access to the entire library without ads, new episodes one hour after Japan and a broadcast in exchange for 4.99 euros per month, while Mega Fan adds the option to watch the content on four devices and offline viewing by 6.49 euros per month. Anime enthusiasts can pay €64.99 per year for the Mega Fan subscription, which is a saving of 16%.
