Like a Voltron-style hip-hop supergroup set to perform for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show on Feb. 13, the group was put together Thursday morning (Jan. 20) in a sneak preview short of their anticipated performance, titled “The Call.” The nearly four-minute short was directed by F  Gary Gray..

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar are all assembling for the big day in Compton, which is directed by Jay Z (The Fate of the Furious) and features cinematography by David Gere (Straight Outta Compton).

The sequence begins with an unseen hand moving enormous golden chess pieces on a huge board that rumbles to life in the form of the Los Angeles cityscape before sliding into a studio bunker.

It’s where current day dark-haired Eminem flies the words to “Rap God” in the air, Minority Report-style, while early career bleach blonde Slim Shady does the same thing right across from him with the lyrics to “The Real Slim Shady.”

As the two sides of Snoop’s persona trade insults, a phone rings and he fades away as a startled Em stares in bewilderment at the message informing him to fly right away. Kendrick is in his studio, where he’s working on new lyrics. He has his headphones on and is listening to “HUMBLE,” which plays over the speakers. Mary seems to get the same signal that causes her to run up on two wheels and make a U-turn when she appears in a high-fashion photo shoot accompanied by her song

The entire picture comes together when we see Dre trek down the beach to “Still D.R.E.” as the crashing surf transforms into a huge piano that plays the song’s distinctive minor-key keyboard riff. With all of the pieces in place.

On the final page, SoFi Stadium (the site of the huge game that will air on NBC and stream on Peacock) is seen through a car window at night as the superfriends approach. The program, which was produced in collaboration with the NFL, Pepsi, and Roc Nation, will be the first time all five superstars perform together.
