The Portuguese Joao Almeida tested positive for covid-19 and withdrew from the Giro d’Italia, in which he was fourth in the general classification, this Thursday in Borgo Valsugana, before the 18th stage.
The 23-year-old Portuguese runner suffered flu-like symptoms overnight and tested positive after taking a test, his team, UAE, said.
“All the other members of the team, coaching staff and riders are negative,” the Emirati formation specified.
The Portuguese, third in the general classification before stage 17, slipped back one position on Wednesday after losing more than a minute in the finish at Lavarone (north).
“Almeida woke up the night before due to persistent pain in his throat,” said Dr. Michele De Grandi, UAE team physician.
Almeida was fourth in the 2020 Giro after having worn the pink jersey until the third week of the race. Last year he was sixth in the Giro.
