The death toll from this year’s strongest storm in the Philippines rose to 42 on Tuesday as rescue teams found more bodies in villages devastated by landslides caused by rain.

Emergency personnel have called off the search for survivors around Baybay City in central Leyte province after deeming it “too dangerous” to operate at night, local government spokeswoman Marissa Miguel Cano said.
