German Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin), positive for coronavirus, will not participate in the first Formula 1 Grand Prix of 2022 in Bahrain, from Friday to Sunday, and will be replaced by his compatriot Nico Hülkenberg, his team announced in a statement on Thursday. .

Since the tests carried out in Bahrain last week, Vettel is the second driver to test positive, after the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), who is already recovered and will be able to participate in the test.

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the Mexican Sergio Pérez, the Canadian Lance Stroll, the British Lewis Hamilton, the Finnish Kimi Raikkonen and the Russian Nikita Mazepin, as well as team leaders, have tested positive for covid and have missed races .

Other drivers, including the Frenchman Pierre Gasly, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc and the British Lando Norris, have also been infected with the coronavirus, but outside the season.

The Bahrain Grand Prix is ​​the first of a record season with 23 events.

It begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT), with the free rehearsal sessions.

Saturday’s qualifying session, which determines the starting grid order, and Sunday’s race are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. GMT), with the arrival of dusk in the small Gulf country.
