Sad news- European Parliament President David Sassoli has died suddenly at the age of 65.
He was born in Florence on 29 September 1952 and studied law before entering politics as a member of the Christian Democrats. He worked his way up through local government to become mayor of Manciano, near Grosseto, for 15 years between 1985 and 2000.
He entered the European Parliament in 1987, representing Tuscany until 1999 when he was elected MEP for Central Italy. When most Italian MEPs switched to pan-European lists ahead of the 2009 election, Sassoli remained with his country’s delegation. He was chair of that group from 2011 until 2014 and then became an S&D vice-president.

Sassoli entered the race for Parliament President when Antonio Tajani was elected president of the European Parliaments in 2017 He became acting president after Tajani resigned to stand in Italy’s general election later that year, and won an initial vote on 2 July 2018 against Italian MEP Eleonora Forenza. On 17 January 2019, after the latest vote for parliament president, Sassoli was elected as President of the European Parliament. He died two days later.
