On Monday, the Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen claimed responsibility for an attack on the United Arab Emirates, asserting that it had carried out a strike on the Gulf country’s authorities after two fires were reported in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi police stated that three fuel tanker trucks had exploded in the industrial Musaffah area near oil company ADNOC’s storage facilities, and a fire had broken out at an airport construction site.

According to the police, “initial inspections discovered components of a small plane that might be a drone at both locations, as well as materials that might have caused the explosion and fire.”

The items were taken to a secure location away from the terminal and “no significant damage” was caused, according to the statement. A thorough investigation has been launched as a result of the incidents.

The military spokesperson of Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is fighting a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, said the group was launching a military campaign “deep in the UAE” that would be announced in coming hours.

In a recent development, pro-coalition troops backed by the UAE have joined the fight against the Houthis in Yemen’s energy-producing provinces of Shabwa and Marib.

In 2019, the UAE had reduced its military presence in Yemen but maintains influence over Yemeni militias it armed and trained.

The Houthis have launched numerous cross-border missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, most recently threatening the UAE.
