Pandit Birju Maharaj, the Kathak dance legend who along with his guru Lachhu Maharaj revived interest in the classical dance form through their creative choreography and dramatic expressions, passed away at a private hospital here this morning. He was 83.

He was admitted to the ICU of a city-based private hospital last night after his condition deteriorated. He passed away at 3.38 AM today, Birju Maharaj’s son Deepak told PTI. The mortal remains of Maharaj were brought to his house at University Road after post-mortem at the state-run Sir Sunderlal Hospital.

He was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and the Padma Bhushan. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 2009. Maharaj, who had served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2006, was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2010. He also served as Kathak Kendra’s chairman.
