It’s a no-brainer that Netflix is revving up for the second season of their most popular television program ever, Squid Game, and while it was outright stated by the streamer today, they did offer the possibility for even more out of this world.
Co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed a second season when asked about it during the company’s quarterly investors meeting, saying, “Definitely (it’s happening).” That was all Ted Sarandos had to say on the matter, but the word “universe” may be pointing toward spinoffs.
After a series has shown immediate success, Netflix has demonstrated that it is eager to develop on the brand. After the first season of The Witcher aired in 2019, not only was the series renewed, but an animated spin-off movie, a live-action prequel series, and even a “family-friendly” animated show have been greenlit.
Although there are no promises, the potential for Squid Game to take place in an alternative reality is certainly there. The series has a lengthy history and world that might support spin-offs, but the notion of numerous sequels, prequels, or spin-offs based on a show that mocks exploitative capitalism may be off-putting to some viewers.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the game’s creator, previously said that he has already had discussions with Netflix about not just season two but also season three, which might be the “universe” angle Sarandos is alluding to.
If we were betting men, not like the ones in Squid Game, Netflix may be drooling over the prospect of making a huge push with Squid Game across all of their entertainment, retailing, and video game platforms.
“So, there’s been a lot of pressure, a lot of demand, and a lot of love for a second season. So I feel like you have no option but to let us down,” Hwang Dong-hyuk previously told The AP.
“First of all, I don’t know. That’s in my mind right now. I’m in the planning stages right now. However, I believe it’s premature to arrive at a conclusion.”
Squid Game swept the charts on Netflix after its release, becoming their biggest original TV show ever and was watched over 1.65 billion hours of the series in its first 28 days of availability.
