The largest black diamond in the world has been unveiled at a jewelry exhibition in Dubai.
The 55.5-carat rough diamond was discovered by Lucara Diamond Corp, a Canadian miner which mines in Botswana’s Karowe mine, north of Gaberone.
This is the ninth time that diamonds over 50 carats have come out of the Karowe mine.
The diamond was mined almost a year ago and has been transported to Dubai so that it can be displayed at the city’s annual Jewellery Week.

It is still presenting some challenges for the experts, as black diamonds are very rare so they do not usually get cut to show their beauty and clarity. So, Lucara sent it to the Assay Laboratory in Antwerp, where it was certified.
An examination from SGS Laboratory confirmed that the diamond is the largest black diamond ever discovered.
