Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. As the final season begins four years after the events of Season 3, not only does it age the characters, but it is a decision that allows their world to show its true colors. Attack on Titan always had a brutal tone, but the way MAPPA shows off the ugly and rough nature of the manga is excellent.

The animation has a real impact on the audience, with air crackling during scenes where characters discuss war crimes and more nihilistic moments weaving tension and excitement across the screen. MAPPA beautifully illustrates the roughness that can happen in a war-torn world just four years old.
