It is a great pleasure for director Denis Villeneuve to make sure that his Dune title card reads correctly as “Dune: Part One”. It prepares the audience that this is not the whole story so that when the end of the film comes, you can only think, “Wait, right?” Because at first, it may seem like an impossible dream. Paul (Timotheé Chalamet) and Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) have been evicted from their homes, the House of Harkonnen is on the rise, the State has taken over, and heroic characters such as Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) and Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa). ) they remained dead. Paul just wants to go with Fremen is not the end, and that is because, in theory, it is not the end. There is every other film Villeneuve hopes to make. And yet the first part of Dune is not anti-climatic according to Paul’s emotional arc.

The ending of the film serves as a tribute to Paul Fremen’s dreams and an indication of what he has to do. So why should he fight Fremen to the point of death? And why does he not agree with Jessica that they should try to retaliate immediately against Imperium? The conclusion is that by showing that Paul is coming to his own and learning to understand his deepest fears, that is, he will be a dictator. In a film where the repeated mantra says “fear is a mental killer”, we are left wondering what Paul really was afraid of. At the end of the film, we get our answer as there is a vision of him conquering the world to bring peace, and it is the end that weeps for a young man who does not want to fight or injure others. We know that Paul does not want to rule, but now that hat has been thrown at him by the death of his father, and in order to bring peace to Arrakis, he also needs to join the Fremen, which will mean. more fighting with Harkonnen. The end of Dune is the beginning in many ways. It is Paul who comes to his conclusion in the wilderness, beginning to become his own person (it is noteworthy that most of the film has Paul in the company of an official or adviser of some kind), and that he can only see that fate among Fremen. But from an emotional point of view, Paul is dealing with his fears, fears that he could not even fully admit before because it was not entirely clear. Paul’s war with the Fremen and the forced assassination of a man symbolize the great essence of Dune, namely that there is no bloodless peace, and no one rises to the position without defiling his hands. For Paul, however, the question was whether such darkness would rule him.
