It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Kathryn Kates, an accomplished actress known for her roles in some of the most iconic TV shows and films of our time. Kates passed away on Saturday (January 22) after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, two children, and three grandchildren.

While Kates started her career as a model, she made the transition to acting in the 1970s. Her first role came in 1975’s Matlock (TV series), where she played ‘Alicia’ for two episodes. However, it wasn’t until 1984 that she got her big break playing Mrs. Kanter-Bloom on Orange Is The New Black. She went on to star in five episodes of Law & Order, as well as being cast in Friends From College and The Good Fight. Some of her other TV credits are Seinfeld, Matlock (TV series), Thunder Alley, The Many Saints Of Newark, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Kathryn Kates was born on April 23, 1945, in New York City. She grew up with her family in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles with her father shortly after high school. While growing up, she modeled for several years before attending the University of California-Berkeley where she majored in English Literature and Drama. After graduation, she moved back to New York City where she taught English Literature at The City College of New York.

One day, Kates was approached by a photographer who asked if she would be interested in acting. She accepted, and the photographer set up a meeting with an agent. Kates began working as an actor soon after that chance encounter. On January 22, 2022, Kates died in Florida at the age of 73 After Battling With Lung Cancer.
