Now, these words act as a tribute to him almost 50 years later. The American singer-songwriter passed away from lung cancer at the age of 72. Both, as a solo artist and with his band, he made an impact on the rock genre of music. His music was popular and recognized in Cleveland, Ohio, and around the American Midwest in the 1970s and 1980s.

Who Is Michael Stanley?

Michael Stanley Gee was born on March 25, 1948, in Cleveland, he grew up in the suburban Rocky River on the West Side.

He claims he fell in love with rock ’n’ roll the first time he heard Elvis Presley following which he formed a garage band, the Scepters, in 1965 as a student.

While being a college student, he was in the band Silk and released an album Smooth as Raw silk in 1969.

Following his work as a regional manager for a record store chain, he released his first solo album in 1973.

He formed the Michael Stanley Band (aka MSB) in 1975 and pursued a more straightforward rock direction.

MSB recorded a string of albums through the late ’70s and early ’80s that were modest successes nationally but major hits in Ohio.

As a solo artist, he went on to record 18 albums, between the years 1996-2017, as well as 14 albums in his band.

Reflecting on the albums and songs, he was clearly one of the greatest singers and songwriters of his time.

He formed The Michael Stanley Band in 1974 with Jonah Kolsen, Daniel Pecchio, and Tommy Dobeck.

There were several personnel changes over the years and by 1982 the group had evolved into a seven-piece band. One of the bands’ greatest achievements included an attendance of 74,404 at Blossom Music Centre in August 1982. The band broke up in 1987 with a series of 12 farewell shows at the Front Row Theatre.

Following his demise, Rock n Roll hall of fame issued a statement “His heartland music resonated with legions of listeners, and his concerts set attendance records and took on mythic proportions. Even more importantly, Michael’s songs spoke to our hearts. As fans, we adored and revered him, and in return, he loved us right back. The energy of his music and its ability to bring people together helped to make Cleveland the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, and it galvanized the community to rally together and make our city the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We will miss Michael dearly.”
