The Serpent is a crime drama serial developed by Mammoth Screen and commissioned by the BBC. The eight-part limited series is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix which follows the crimes of a serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who murdered young tourists between 1975–1976. While the production of the series was paused from March 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, it premiered on BBC One on New Year’s Day in 2021 and all eight episodes were immediately made available on BBC iPlayer.
The series premiered from 1 January – 14 February 2021. It was available for streaming on Netflix in April 2021. Because this is a show based largely on real-life events, you can’t just conjure another season out of thin air. So naturally, there are no plans for a season 2, and the reason for that is also that as of now, Charles Sobhraj’s story is going to be largely complete.
Although the series was especially appreciated by the audience and received positive reactions, some calling it the best series produced by BBS, the time jumps were a problem to almost everyone.
