During her first year of high school, she left Dos Pueblos High School to pursue her musical career. She started her music lessons at the Academy Of The West.

Her music lessons caught the attention of Jennifer Knapp and Tennessee who decided to improve her writing skills as well. Soon she started recording demos and learned how to write songs and play guitar. Later Perry recorded her debut album with Red Hill Records in 2001 which was commercially unsuccessful.

The next year she moved to Los Angeles and began working with Glen Ballard, Dr.Luke, and Max Martin. She adopted her mother’s maiden name Katy Perry as her stage name and signed a contract with Capitol Records in 2007.
