Satoshi is invited by Professor Yukinari Ookido to attend Professor Sakuragi’s new lab opening in Vermillion City. The ceremony is, however, cut short after an alert of a rare legendary pokemon sends everyone into a frenzy. Caught up in the mess, Satoshi is able to find legendary pokemon, Lugia, along with several other trainers. Joining in on the battle with his trusty Pikachu he attacks Lugia with a Thunderbolt. Shurgging it of Lugia attempts to flee. Before it could do so, Satoshi make a last-minute play by jumping on the back of the pokemon. To his surprise, he finds another trainer next to him on Lugia’s back by the name of Gou. As Lugia lets them off our heroes report back what they saw giving their own insights to the lab. Impressed by the duo, Professor Sakuragi asks them to be his research partners. Thus begins the story of our heroes.

Gou and Satoshi find themselves in a small town in the Jhoto region where it has been nighttime for over a week. The lack of the sun makes mundane tasks hard for the citizens causing several issues. The pair then soon finds a young girl by the name of Kirara who has lost her pokemon Py, Cleffa, after it went up to the heavens now only visible as a shooting star. Sad about its departure, she wishes it to be night all the time so she can keep seeing her beloved pokemon. It is soon revealed that her wish was granted by a Pokemon named Unknown and after a fierce battle and with the help of Shirona, Cynthia, who happened to be in the city, our heroes were able to help Kirara come to terms with the departure of her pokemon and also bring daylight back to the small town.
